Jeanne Akins Weil

Jeanne Akins Weil, 72, died August 16, 2011. She fought a courageous battle against lymphoma which afflicted her three times over a period of three-and-a-half years.

Jeanne was born in Charleston, W.Va., on November 27, 1938, to John and Esther Akins. She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School, attended Lipscomb University, and then met the love of her life, Gilbert Weil. They married in 1960 in Charleston.

They moved to Teays Valley, W.Va., where their children, David and Sarah, grew up. The family had some great adventures when Union Carbide transferred Gil to Puerto Rico, New Jersey, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Salvador, Brazil, Calgary, Ontario, Canada; Charleston; New Jersey; and back to Canada. Throughout all the moving around, raising two children, learning foreign languages, and adapting to different cultures, Jeanne displayed the strength, wisdom, love, and vitality that defined her character.

After retiring in North Carolina, Jeanne enjoyed some great friendships in several bridge groups. She loved her cats and, for relaxation, sat on the back porch with a cat on her lap reading a good book. Travel was a priority, too, especially cruising. She seldom experienced a dull moment.

Jeanne was a beloved wife, mother, and friend.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, H. Gilbert Weil; their son, David (Monica) of High Point, N.C.; daughter, Sarah "Susie" of Raleigh, N.C.; and her Siamese cat, Mindy, who was a constant companion.

The family would like to thank Dr. Crane, Cindy, Dr. Shea, and Dr. Jones for their devotion and their tireless efforts on her behalf. The family would also like to thank Rex Hospital and Hospice of Wake County for their gentle and loving care during her last week.

A memorial celebrating Jeanne's life will be held at a later date.
